As the last blooms of summer flowers drop and September begins, it’s time for some fall cooking. Labor Day specifically is a good time to send off summer and welcome the fall season! The holiday falls on the first weekend of September and calls for celebration: Not only for the end of summer, but as an opportunity to celebrate American laborers. The labor union movement of the 19th century led to the progression of worker’s rights and ultimately a celebration for such in the form of Labor Day. Now, Labor Day is a celebration of summer and an easy transition into fall.
Fall Cooking
For Tacoma Boys, the autumn season means getting ready for fall cooking with seasonal snacks and dishes. It’s a great time to get cozy, prepare for the holidays, and enjoy fall produce and herbs: Think squash, apples, Brussels sprouts, sage, thyme, and more! Labor Day is a good chance to transition into fall cooking because it represents the end of summer. Fall cooking can be so tasty with hearty, savory dishes and sweet baked goods. Specifically, a good pie in the fall is so simple and delicious–– Check out our blog post for a guide on Tacoma Boy’s favorite fall pies and treats!
Celebrating Labor Day
The long weekend surrounding Labor Day means celebrations can last for days. There are plenty of things to do and tasty foods to cook to celebrate the holiday. The transition into a new season means it’s one of your last chances to cook your favorite summer foods: Cook up your remaining summer zucchini and corn on the grill to say goodbye to summer! Backyard barbecues and picnics are common on the holiday. Same goes for parades, parties, and special events like speeches. Plus, many workers have the day off in honor of Labor Day. This means extra time to relax and enjoy the (hopefully!) warm summer weather.
Foods To Eat and Things To Do
Celebrate the end of summer with your picnic favorites like potato salad, chips, and fresh fruit: You can also grill your favorite summer and fall foods to mark the change of seasons. Then, get active and maybe you’ll try something new while you’re at it!
Find a Labor Day parade near you and join in to celebrate.
Play sports like disc golf, tennis, kayaking, and bicycling.
Grill up Johnson’s Smokehouse Pepperjack Cheese Bratwurst and serve them in Tacoma Boys’ Hoagie Buns.
Try a BLT Salad: This dish is light but hearty with crunchy romaine lettuce,Hempler’s Uncured Applewood Bacon and Drew’s Organic Rosemary Balsamic Dressing.
Grill some of Tacoma Boys Pork Baby Back Ribs, then slather them with Mr. Texas BBQ Sauce.
Seasonal Recipes for Autumn
If summer must end, then seasonal recipes for autumn are something to look forward to! Comfort food in general is a good go-to when relaxing on chilly days or spending time with family. A series of holidays include Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas— all great times to have fun cooking and use seasonal ingredients. Labor Day is a good time to mix and match summer and fall recipes because there is a wide variety of produce available. As we transition into fall weather and food, it’s nice to get cozy with some seasonal recipes for autumn. Dreaming of warmer days, chirping birds, and spring flowers? The morning dew is slowly melting and spring is almost here! Here in the Pacific Northwest, we’re lucky to live among bountiful greenery all year round. But there’s just something special about the beautiful bright colors of blooming tulips, primroses and other flowers in the springtime.
As the earth wakes from a cold winter and the ground warms, small bits of color light up a dreary environment. You might start to see some pink, yellow, and purple bits pop up from the green. Spring flowers are ready to be harvested and gathered in groups to enjoy and appreciate!
Spring Flowers – It’s That Time of Year!
Despite the chill in the air, it’s getting to be that time of year when spring flowers are blooming. Just about anyone appreciates the pop of color, fragrance, and character that spring flowers will add to any space. Tacoma Boys’ selection of locally grown and cut flowers like primroses and tulips showcase only the brightest and freshest floras, hand-sorted to ensure each petal and stem is pristine.
How to Stylize Spring Flowers
Primroses
Start your spring early and spruce up your home decor with a pot of hanging primroses on the porch.
If you prefer primroses, you’ll need to pick out a pot and a bag of potting soil. While you can pick the blooms from the primrose plant and place them in water, we recommend leaving the flower, from petal to root, in the soil it comes in. That way you can enjoy the aesthetic of a living plant for longer than flowers with cut stems, potentially for years to come!
Select your favorite color pot to match your desired primrose (or visa versa). Whether you prefer a ceramic or concrete pot, you’ll find many colors and designs to choose from at Tacoma Boys.
Tulips
Tulips have long stems and do well in tall vases. Fill the vase with water and be sure to submerge the stems as soon as you get home.
Refresh the water every other day or as needed to keep the silky tulips fresh for as long as possible. For more tips on how to style spring flowers, check out this guide on 5 Ways to Style Spring Flowers by Cottage Style.
Tulips and Primroses: Tacoma Boys’ Favorites
Tulips and primroses have long been known for their beautiful blooms in various colors. Primroses are early bloomers— You won’t have to wait until after the last frost to add the flower to your garden or front steps. And it does well here in Washington not despite the lack of sunlight, but because of it! Primroses prefer partial shade and indirect light, which is one reason it does so well in the late winter and early spring.
Tulips are easy to grow because the bulbs are planted in the fall and blossom a few months later in the spring. The long-stemmed flowers pair nicely with slightly shorter flowers like daffodils or primroses for a beautiful assorted arrangement that adds an extra element of color to any room or yard.
Go for the bold and the bright or stay subtle with a simple white. Locally grown tulips and primroses are available at Tacoma Boys in a partial rainbow of colors from white and yellow to pinks, purples, and reds.
Flowers as Gifts
Locally grown and stylized in the functional art of plant pots, giving flowers as gifts is a timeless tradition for good reason. A big bouquet of flowers is a great gift for just about anyone at any time of the year. Some of our favorite ways to gift flowers are:
Birthdays
Valentine’s Day
Anniversaries
Mother’s Day
Though associated with romance, there’s nothing stopping you from treating your best friend or family member with a fresh bouquet of different flowers or a planted pot. And since they are locally grown and cut, they can appreciate the flowers as gifts for days or even weeks! During the colder months, we tend to trade in the fresh fruits and vegetables we associate with summer for the rich, hearty meals of winter. Soups laden with browned meats and plump beans are a true staple of our winter diets. Even though summer has come and gone, there are still plenty of fresh vegetables available, some still growing and thriving in the garden despite the cold temperatures. These fruits and vegetables are rich with vitamins and nutrients to keep us healthy through the winter, so why not dish out the nutrients with a vitamin rich side dish using our winter recipe roundup?
To make adding a vitamin packed side dish to your meal a cinch, we’ve gathered some of our favorite, simple fall vegetable, side dish recipes for you to try.
Leafy Greens & Brassicas
Many sturdier greens thrive in the garden through Pacific Northwest winters. Kale, swiss chard, and collard greens are among the sturdy greens that keep growing right on through the winter and are available fresh in our markets.
Kale
Kale is rich in vitamins A, C, K, B vitamins, calcium, manganese, potassium, and magnesium. It’s no wonder kale makes the short list for power packed veggies. It is also loaded with antioxidants that have anti-inflammatory effects.
The bright color of red cabbage comes from pigments called anthocyanins, which, in simple terms, translates to loads of antioxidants that promote a healthy immune system. Red cabbage is easy to add to a meal. Slice and use in the place of lettuce on your tacos, add to a green salad for extra color and nutrients, or mix it up in this delicious and fresh winter slaw.
Pumpkins are not just for jack-o-lanterns, though we do love a skillfully carved toothy grin. Loaded with beta carotene, vitamin C and E, iron and folate, pumpkins and other winter squashes offer support for vision and promote immune health.
High in fiber and in vitamins C and A, as well as potassium, root vegetables are an easy choice to add to your winter diet. Many root vegetables are excellent for longer storage, so you can stock up and be sure to have them on hand, when you get the craving.
If you need even more inspiration to add a little vitamin goodness to your winter menus using fresh, local, seasonal ingredients, check out our Guide to Local Seasonal Eating or ask one of our amazing produce specialists what seasonal fruits and vegetables they particularly enjoy.

What exactly does local seasonal eating mean? Local seasonal eating involves consuming produce that is ready for harvest in its correct season depending on where you live. For fall, that means all of your favorite local fall produce is ready for harvest during the fall season! This is why you see an influx of apples, pumpkins, turnips, pears, and more at your local Tacoma Boys when the fall season approaches in the Pacific Northwest.
Although it may be exciting to get your pumpkins and go on a fall baking rampage, there are numerous other benefits that come with eating and shopping locally and in-season. Some of which you may not know! From personal health benefits to local farming support, local seasonal eating is Tacoma Boys’ way to go.
Local Seasonal Eating & Its Benefits
It’s Good For Your Health
When you’re eating locally, this typically means you’re loading up on local fresh fruits and vegetables that have recently been harvested. It also means you are getting a wide variety of whole foods in your diet throughout the year. Different fruits and vegetables have individual nutrient dense compounds that help build your immune system and fight off free radicals. This can be antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and phyotchemicals that can help prevent and protect from various diseases and sometimes even cancer. For example, you can read here the multiple health benefits that come with eating fall favorite pumpkin!
The Produce Tastes Better
Choosing to eat local, in-season produce means you are getting freshly picked fruits and vegetables. The result of freshly harvested goods is that the produce tastes amazing! Local produce should also have a brighter and more vibrant appearance as opposed to produce sitting on store shelves for long time periods. Produce that is grown out-of-season is typically harvested early, transported, and ripened artificially in a hot house. After this, it is sent to large chain stores to be sold.
What sets Tacoma Boys apart is the fact that we are able carry fresh produce that may not be in-season in the PNW. How is this possible? Out-of-season produce is often flown in and has only been off the vine for less than 24 hours. This allows Tacoma Boys to provide fresh produce from all seasons year-round without any artificial ripening or unnecessary, prolonged transportation.
Supports Local Farms
When you purchase food that is grown locally, it helps support local farmers maintain their land and continue to grow produce for you! An amazing benefit that comes along with this is that local farmers can tell you how and where the food was grown. This allows you to have more knowledge about where your food is coming from and how it was brought up – providing peace of mind overall.
In Season Local Fall Produce
Some local fall produce that Tacoma Boys looks forward to seeing every year in the PNW:
Fruits
Pears
Apples
Grapes
Quince

Breaking away from processed and packed foods and switching to local fruits and vegetables is a healthy choice. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t have to cost more to make this change. There are plenty of ways to invest in fresh, local produce at low prices.
Tacoma Boys and H&L Produce offer the freshness and quality of a produce stand with the convenience of a 24-hour store.
We make it as easy as possible for you and your family to eat healthy. Follow these tips and you will never have to ask “How can I save money at a produce stand near me?” again!
Think “Local Produce Stand Near Me” Instead of Big Chains
There are local produce stands and local farmer’s markets all around you. During most of the year, that is. Living in the Pacific Northwest means that we have to do our shopping indoors once Fall and Winter roll around.
Every year, local stands become more and more popular. Many people have been making the switch to shopping locally for their produce. Shopping for local produce is a great way to find some amazing deals that you would never be able to find in a larger chain grocery store.
Buy According to the Season
When you purchase produce that’s in-season, you will find that it’s more affordable. You’ll also find that it often tastes better; because that particular item was picked and sold at its peak. An added health benefit to eating fruit in season is that it often contains more nutrients than the same product in the off-season.
Expect to see deals and sales on in-season produce because of the quantity and quality produced.
Freeze / Preserve What You Don’t Eat!
One sure way to save some money is to preserve your produce right after purchasing it. This is a great way to take advantage of in-season pricing! Buy what you can afford, eat what you need, then preserve or freeze the rest.
Freezing Produce
There are different methods that work well for each type of fruit or vegetable.
Some of the best fruits and vegetables for freezing are:
Kale
Corn
Berries
Peaches
Avocados
Think of this process as an investment. Plan ahead and bulk up/preserve what produce you use most.
Preserves
You may love some delicious jam on your toast in the morning, or pickles with your sandwich for lunch. At one time these tasty treats were a necessity! Long before refrigeration was accessible to the general public, cultures across the globe developed ways to preserve their produce, so that they would have nutritious, delicious food items through the winter.
There are many ways to pickle or preserve your fruits and vegetables. If you you’d like to experiment with the final product without going through the process, try some of our specialty canned items! We have an amazing selection that you will not find in any other store.
Produce Doesn’t Have to be Perfect
Remember, you don’t need perfect produce. Local farms and stands often mark down the produce that isn’t the prettiest. Some people might call this “choosing seconds,” but as long as it tastes good, a few bruises or discoloration still works for canning, eating raw or other recipes.
Truthfully, at Tacoma Boys and H&L Produce we are sticklers for quality. You may not find ugly produce at our markets but you’ll still find the great deals. How is that possible?
We keep inventory rotating so the produce you take home is fresh and delicious every time. When specific fruits, vegetables, and even meats are in-season we put them on our Weekly Specials Flyer at a great price to make sure we sell out.
Remember this next time you see a deal on your favorite produce; they tend to go fast!
