It’s that time again! Thanksgiving is right around the corner and it’s time to plan out the most important part of the menu: Thanksgiving pie. Although the rest of the menu matters as well, your Thanksgiving pie decision is the grand finale when hosting! Whether you plan to whip up the pie crust and pie filling from scratch, or purchase a pre-made pie, this Tacoma Boys guide has everything you’ll need to get geared up for this year’s Thanksgiving pie.
Choosing the Right Crust for Thanksgiving Pie
Pie crust may be one of the most daunting aspects of baking a pie, especially if it’s your Thanksgiving pie. Depending on the recipe it can be incredibly easy to make, or sparingly difficult. Tacoma Boys loves to find recipes that require minimal ingredients and explains each step throughout the process. This easy pie crust recipe from Natasha’s Kitchen is a great example! Using a high quality all purpose flour like Bob’s Red Mills will help with creating an outstanding final product for the ultimate Thanksgiving pie. You can find Bob’s Red Mills and other flour options in Tacoma Boys’ wide assortment of baking essentials.
If you’re wanting to make a Thanksgiving pie this year but are looking to avoid the pie crust process, have no fear! Tacoma Boys has a variety of premade pie crusts and pie crust mixes to make your pie baking experience a lot easier.

Thanksgiving Baking with Your Favorite Pie Fillings
Pumpkin Pie
Pumpkin pie may be among the most popular pies when it comes to Thanksgiving baking. What is it about pumpkin pie that embodies all of fall’s favorite flavors? This classic pumpkin pie recipe by Jo Cooks is a great recipe that is simple to follow and allows you to use a premade pie crust if desired! Most pumpkin pie recipes call for canned pumpkin, but if you’re looking to be a little more adventurous, you can make your own pumpkin puree using sugar pumpkins. You can find these pumpkins at your local Tacoma Boys. They’re smaller, less fibrous, and sweeter, making them perfect for baking. Follow the Pioneer Woman’s recipe for homemade pumpkin puree. It’s a lot easier than you’d think!
Pecan Pie
Another Thanksgiving classic is pecan pie. It’s sweet, salty, and has a rich filling with a caramel-like flavor, and finished with pecans for added crunch. Pecan pie can be a hit or miss, but it is definitely worth the try when you can make it with quality ingredients. The Tacoma Boys’ baking section has a wide variety of ingredients to choose from depending on the recipe you use. However, for pecan pie we suggest using Northwest Delights pecans – they’re some of the best!
Apple Pie
Of course, apple pie is in the top three for Thanksgiving pies! It’s quite simple to make the filling and put together when using a premade pie crust. This recipe by Food Network is great for a classic apple pie. Tacoma Boys suggests using Granny Smith apples because their tart flavor profile balances out the sweetness of the filling, but you can find a wide assortment of fall’s favorite fruit throughout your local Tacoma Boys! If you’re short on time, check out the freezer section to spot the two-pound bag of Remlinger Farms Hand-Picked Granny Smith Apples that are pre-sliced – we’d say that’s a win!
Premade Pies
If you’re hosting for Thanksgiving, but baking a pie from scratch just isn’t your jam, Tacoma Boys has you covered. Simply take a stroll through the freezer section and select a premade pie that suits your holiday pie needs!

If you want to take your pie topping to the next level, pick up Smith Brothers heavy cream and make your homemade whipped cream at home. Mashed Potatoes
Mashed potatoes are arguably the most important side for Thanksgiving. They are a soft buttery vessel for rich and creamy turkey gravy and pair perfectly with a bite of stuffing. Tacoma Boys has every potato you can think of to make your perfect Thanksgiving mashed potatoes!
Yukon Gold Buttery Rich Potatoes
Yukon Gold potatoes have a slight yellow flesh and yellow-white skin. When cooked, they are slightly sweet and incredibly creamy; making them an amazing candidate for mashed potatoes.
Russet potatoes are the most common potato found in kitchens all around. They’re incredibly versatile due to their mild flavor profile and commonly have a white interior with brown skin.
Red potatoes are typically small or medium in size and have red skin and white flesh. When cooked, red potatoes have a smooth and creamy texture which is perfect for mashed potatoes.
If making homemade potatoes is not on your agenda, check out Edward & Sons Organic Mashed Potatoes at your local Tacoma Boys. They come in a box, are ready to eat within five minutes, and are available in homestyle or roasted garlic flavor!
Stuffing
Stuffing – you either love it or you don’t. Regardless, it seems to be a side that is always on the table at Thanksgiving no matter what. There are countless recipes for homemade stuffing, but grabbing a premade box is just as good! You can find boxed stuffing in Tacoma Boys’ bread section.

Olivia’s Cornbread Dressing

At Tacoma Boys, you can find Pacific Foods Organic Cream of Mushroom Condensed Soup and Health Valley Cream of Mushroom Soup to use as the base of the casserole. Using canned green beans works well, however, using fresh green beans will take your casserole up a notch or two!
Cranberry sauce adds just the right amount of sweetness to your Thanksgiving plate without it being too overpowering. Making cranberry sauce from scratch may seem daunting, but it can be a fairly simple process. Opting for homemade versus canned will impress any guests at your table this year! Grab a bag of Ocean Spray’s Organic Cranberries in the freezer section of Tacoma Boys to whip up your own.
When you’re hosting for a big holiday like Thanksgiving, the prepping aspect can be a bit overwhelming. Where should you start when it comes to Thanksgiving sides, turkey, or even the pies?! Fortunately, there are a multitude of ways you can prep beforehand to make the day-of process easier on yourself. When prepping for Thanksgiving sides, it’s important to delegate tasks or even ask others to bring certain dishes. Afterall, you want to be able to enjoy the day, too! What exactly does local seasonal eating mean? Local seasonal eating involves consuming produce that is ready for harvest in its correct season depending on where you live. For fall, that means all of your favorite local fall produce is ready for harvest during the fall season! This is why you see an influx of apples, pumpkins, turnips, pears, and more at your local Tacoma Boys when the fall season approaches in the Pacific Northwest.
Although it may be exciting to get your pumpkins and go on a fall baking rampage, there are numerous other benefits that come with eating and shopping locally and in-season. Some of which you may not know! From personal health benefits to local farming support, local seasonal eating is Tacoma Boys’ way to go.
Local Seasonal Eating & Its Benefits
It’s Good For Your Health
When you’re eating locally, this typically means you’re loading up on local fresh fruits and vegetables that have recently been harvested. It also means you are getting a wide variety of whole foods in your diet throughout the year. Different fruits and vegetables have individual nutrient dense compounds that help build your immune system and fight off free radicals. This can be antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and phyotchemicals that can help prevent and protect from various diseases and sometimes even cancer. For example, you can read here the multiple health benefits that come with eating fall favorite pumpkin!
The Produce Tastes Better
Choosing to eat local, in-season produce means you are getting freshly picked fruits and vegetables. The result of freshly harvested goods is that the produce tastes amazing! Local produce should also have a brighter and more vibrant appearance as opposed to produce sitting on store shelves for long time periods. Produce that is grown out-of-season is typically harvested early, transported, and ripened artificially in a hot house. After this, it is sent to large chain stores to be sold.
What sets Tacoma Boys apart is the fact that we are able carry fresh produce that may not be in-season in the PNW. How is this possible? Out-of-season produce is often flown in and has only been off the vine for less than 24 hours. This allows Tacoma Boys to provide fresh produce from all seasons year-round without any artificial ripening or unnecessary, prolonged transportation.
Supports Local Farms
When you purchase food that is grown locally, it helps support local farmers maintain their land and continue to grow produce for you! An amazing benefit that comes along with this is that local farmers can tell you how and where the food was grown. This allows you to have more knowledge about where your food is coming from and how it was brought up – providing peace of mind overall.
In Season Local Fall Produce
Some local fall produce that Tacoma Boys looks forward to seeing every year in the PNW:

Apples

As fall quite literally ‘falls’ upon us, it’s the perfect time to get geared up for the holidays. If you love to host, Tacoma Boys has an easy guide to help you build the perfect fall charcuterie board that is sure to impress guests. Are you familiar with charcuterie? If not, have no fear! According to the Cambridge Dictionary, the French word charcuterie translates to cold cuts, or cured meat in English. These meats are typically served on a wooden board and are accompanied by various cheeses and grazing foods.
What’s great about this appetizer is that it is completely customizable for any occasion. In this case, we’d say the new season deserves the perfect fall charcuterie board in its honor, wouldn’t you agree?! A charcuterie board may be the easiest and most impressive appetizer you can set out at a party. Depending on the way you arrange it, the visual of the board can be quite stunning – some might even say, “Instagram worthy”.
How to Start Building Your Fall Charcuterie Board
Firstly, when building an appetizer board, there’s a wide variety of ingredients you can choose from to create the ultimate fall charcuterie board. Secondly, pairing in-season produce with complimentary cheeses, cured meats, and seasonal toppers like fruit jam and spreads will keep your guests coming back for more. It’s important to play around with different textures and ensure there is a good combination of savory and sweet. Lucky for you, Tacoma Boys has everything you need – including great deals – to help you build the perfect fall charcuterie board!
Choose Your Meat
There is an amazing selection of cured meats and cold cuts to choose from at Tacoma Boys. We love the salty flavor profile the meats bring to the boards and how versatile they can be when it comes to pairing them with other foods. We suggest choosing 2-3 different charcuterie meats for your board. A few different cured meats we are loving for a fall charcuterie board are:
We love these charcuterie meats because they are made with so much creativity and incredible flavors. We suggest the black pepper salami made with peppercorns and red wine, or the salami made with sea salt and black summer truffles. We must warn you though, you should be careful to not eat it all before placing it on your board!
Brooklyn Cured is a small batch charcuterie brand that packs a punch when it comes to flavor. The smoked beef salami is a New York City deli style meat that was created with inspiration from New York delis and their history. Their bresaola is another great option for a fall charcuterie board as its air dried beef, similar to prosciutto, but made with beef as opposed to pork. Adding a unique cured meat made with beef will really elevate your appetizer.
We carry a wide selection of Columbus Craft Meats! Some of our favorites to add to a charcuterie board are prosciutto, genoa salami, and the peppered salami. The peppered salami brings a subtle amount of heat and is great when paired with nuts, dried fruit, and fig jam!
Select Your Cheese
In our opinion, cheese is in the top three most important ingredients for a fall charcuterie board. Tacoma Boys carries a very large selection so you have plenty choices to choose from to ensure a perfect board. Some of our favorite choices are: Apple Farms Smoked Gouda, Beecher’s Flagship Handmade Cheese, Hoffman’s Vermont Cheddar, and. Henri Hutin Brie Couronne, and Montchevre Blueberry Vanilla Goat Cheese. We recommend always having at least one soft cheese such as brie or goat cheese.
Pick Your Crackers
Finishing off our top 3 ingredients for a charcuterie board is crackers, bread, breadsticks, and more. Having this component for people to use as a base for their cured meats, cheese, and fruits. As a result, it adds great texture. Right now we are loving: I Grissini Del Vecchio Palone Crispy Breadsticks with olive oil and Tacoma Boys French Baguette Chips. If you’re looking for a gluten free option, Simple Mills has a fantastic line of grain free crackers.
Finish with Fall Produce and Local Favorites
Sweet
After you’ve decided on your cured meat, cheese, and crackers, it’s time to build your board! It’s important to finish it with fresh fall produce and your favorite local ingredients. We recommend using fall’s favorite fruit: apples, figs, organic locally grown concord grapes, and freshly sliced Bartlett pears. For fruit jams and spreads, Tacoma Boys’ Strawberry Fig Preserves, Divina Kalamata Fig Spread, and Stonewall Kitchen Fig & Ginger Jam will provide the perfect amount of sweetness for your board.
Salty
Adding a few salty, acidic components will bring this fall board to the next level. We love kalamata olives, green olives, and picked vegetables. These foods help balance out the rest of the board.
To assemble:
Place your cheeses on various spots on the board as well as your jam/preserves. You can pour your jam into small serving bowls or simply place the jar straight onto the board.
Fold your cured meats however you like, or simply spread them out around the board’s empty spaces and around the cheese.
Follow with your cracker/breadstick choices by placing them around the board similar to the meat.
Finish your board by filling in the leftover gaps with sliced fruit, dried fruit, and nuts.
Garnish your board with fresh herbs like rosemary and thyme. Place cheese knives and serving utensils around the board.
For those with kids, omit the cheese knives and simply replace the blocks of cheese with pre-sliced cheese. Having everything pre-sliced such as the cured meats, cheese, and fruit makes this an easy appetizer for all!
Note: remember that charcuterie boards are rustic and don’t need to be perfect!
Just Like That, An Easy Fall Appetizer
You really cannot go wrong with choosing a charcuterie board as an appetizer when hosting. They’re versatile, creative, fun to assemble, and simply easy! Although these boards are great for hosting, they’re also perfect for a date night, a picnic, a movie night with your girls, and don’t forget the most important part – they pair great with all kinds of wine – enjoy!
It’s time, yet again, to don your lederhosen, twist up some pretzels, and crack a malty german beer. If lederhosen aren’t your thing, you can still throw a great Oktoberfest beer tasting party in your American casual wear. The extensive beer selection at Tacoma Boys has you covered.
Beer with a Side of History
Oktoberfest began in 1810 when Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria was married to Therese Charlotte Luise of Saxony-Hildburghausen (don’t worry, there won’t be a quiz). The king threw a party for the people in his new wife’s honor with free beer, food, and horse races. Suffice it to say he threw a party worth repeating. For over 200 years Oktoberfest is still celebrated at the beginning of October in Germany and all around the world. And, while you may not care to celebrate a queen long since departed from us, you might get behind the idea of beer and celebrating the end of a good summer harvest.
A typical Oktoberfest beer has a strong, toasty malt aroma, is brewed in spring and aged throughout the summer. American made Oktoberfest beers can vary from one another and from the traditional style served in Germany. So why not throw an Oktoberfest beer tasting party and see how they all stack up next to one another?

Make It a Competition
Be playful in the way you present the beer selection. Sure, you could just drop those beers in a cooler with ice for your guests. That’s a great approach for a casual Oktoberfest. But, to make it a festive occasion, why not set up a true Oktoberfest tasting and rank those beers?!
Sampler Trays
Called a “flight” in the beer world, a selection of 4-6oz pours of beer is a great option to give guests a true sample of each beer selection. Keep it simple by placing a large sheet of butcher paper across your table and hand labeling each beer directly on the butcher paper. While beer connoisseurs will tell you there is correctly shaped glassware for each style of beer, you can make your life easy and use small mason jars for tasting glasses. You’ll still get a great tasting beer and you can save those jars for all that jam you plan to make when berry season comes back around.
Beer Tasting Cards
Create a simple card for guests to rank beers and then compare notes. Tasting cards make comparing beers more straight forward. Typical beer tasting cards might include categories like: appearance, smell, taste, aftertaste, and drinkability. You can also throw in a fun category like “describe beer using a song lyric” or “if this beer was a color it would be _______.” Why not give a prize for the most creative responses, while you’re at it?
Tournament Bracket
Create a simple bracket and have guests sample two beers at a time, taking a vote to see which beer will advance into the next round. This is a great, interactive way to compare the beers.
If you want to go the extra mile, start the night out by letting each guest make a guess at which beer will take home the championship and send the winner home with a six pack of beer or a gift card to pick out their favorite beer at Tacoma Boys or H&L Produce.
Don’t Forget the Nosh and Beer
There’s a reason why taprooms are notorious for snack pretzels. Beer and food go hand in hand. Tacoma Boys has your german grub covered. Here are some ideas to keep your guests well fed.
Brats and Beer
…a match made in heaven. Tacoma Boys is your local fresh meat market. If you’re not sure what to get, ask your Tacoma Boys butcher for their favorite german sausages to try. Grill up sausages and then cut them into bite sized portions to serve on a platter with toothpicks and ample amounts of stone ground mustard and sauerkraut.
Pretzels and Mustard
Pretzels are the quintessential German snack food. Make easy, shortcut soft pretzels with our ready-made pizza dough by Kalama Sourdough Bakery found in our cheese section. For a true German treat, dip those tasty pretzels in mustard. Pick out a sampling of mustards from our large selection.
Spicy and Aged Cheeses
Skip the mild cheeses that might be drowned out by the robust flavor of a fest beer and head for the sharp cheddar, jalapeno jack, blue cheese, and goudas. You’ll have plenty to choose from at Tacoma Boys and H&L Produce. The cheese aisle is almost as much fun as our candy aisle.

Pumpkins are here, and not a moment too soon! With the rain settling in for the season, we could use a spirited orange squash to brighten up the place. And this year’s crop does not disappoint! Looking for more than your typical run-of-the-mill pumpkin to spruce up your porch this fall? In keeping with what you’ve come to expect, Tacoma Boys and H&L Produce has a wide and unique selection of autumn squash. We’re certain you’ll find something to fall for!
Tacoma Boys’ Surplus of Sensational Squash
Did you know that pumpkins, like most produce, come in many varieties? If you’ve ever been to one of Washington’s famous pumpkin patches, you’ve probably seen many of them. Lucky for you, you don’t have to go all the way to a pumpkin farm to grab one for yourself! We’ve got pumpkins a-plenty right here at your neighborhood Tacoma Boys and H&L Produce. Let’s meet the contenders.
The Warty Goblin
Whoever names these things either has an immense imagination or none at all. This gorgeous gourd looks just like it sounds. Perfect for…well, we’re not exactly sure what it’s good for, but we sure love it! You don’t even have to carve this one up for it to be a spooky spectacle, it’s already got all the ghoul you need. Or pair it with some mums in your best attempt to soften its…dramatic..features. Either way, this little guy has all the makings of a front porch showstopper.
The Cinderella
Put it next to your Warty Goblin, and you’ve got yourself a fairytale! Cinderella Pumpkins are known for their rich color, flattened round shape, and creamy sweet flavor. Grab three, stack them on top of each other, stuff some leaves in between, and you have yourself a centerpiece.
The Porcelain Doll Pink
It’s said these pumpkins were created to raise awareness of breast cancer. Cute as a button with a heart of gold! What more could you want in a pumpkin?
The Ghost
In keeping with the Halloween theme, this white pumpkin is all the rage for decorating and carving alike. Prefer painting to carving? A Ghost Pumpkin makes a perfect blank slate. (Moms, pumpkin painting is a great substitute for carving for the littles among us.) A classy alternative to the typical orange and red motif of fall, cluster a few white pumpkins together for an understated effect.
The One Too Many
We would say you can’t make these names up, but somebody clearly did. Cheekily named for its resemblance to the bloodshot eyes of someone with a hangover, One Too Many Pumpkins are a great blend of white and orange all in one squash. Cluster with one white pumpkin and one orange for a pleasing symmetry, or let this striking autumn squash stand alone.
3 Ways to Enjoy Your Autumn Squash
Now that you know what you’re getting, we’ll talk you through what to do with them!
1. Chow down.
This is the most obvious and least likely reason you’ll purchase a pumpkin this year. You’ll probably make your pumpkin pies, scones, breads, and donuts from canned pumpkin like the rest of us (we have some canned pumpkin by the way, if that’s the route you choose, but we digress…) If you do choose to upstage us all with your Martha Stewart ways, you probably already have a recipe passed down from your great grandmother. But in case you don’t, you can give this one from Allrecipes a try. For this, you’ll want to use a sweet, smooth variety, like a Sugar Pumpkin or the Cinderella. Most pumpkins are edible, but some are better for eating than others, so do your research. May it be worth your extra efforts!
2. Carve a Jack-O-Lantern!
Is it even fall if you haven’t spent some time elbow deep in a pumpkin, digging around for the last vestiges of its slimy innards? We think not. Do you go for the classic toothy grin and triangle eyes? Or do you prefer to get creative with well known cartoons or pumpkin versions of political figures? Either way, you might want to go with the traditional Jack-O-Lantern pumpkin. Although technically, you can pick any kind of autumn squash you want, as long as it’s big enough to withstand whatever carved creation you choose.
3. Decorate for fall.
This is the easiest of your options AND works perfectly in combination with either of the above. Here’s how it works. You buy a pumpkin. Any pumpkin will do. However many you want. Then you put them literally anywhere. And suddenly it’s fall! Want a cute porch? Put a pumpkin on it. Need a fall tablescape? Pumpkin it up! Wondering what to do with your mantle now that the leaves are falling? One or two pumpkins will do! You get the idea. Leave it there as long as you want (not too long…it’s still food), dust it off, and cook it up or carve it out. Who knew a fruit so orange could be so multifunctional? Also, who knew pumpkin is a fruit? Now you know. You’re welcome.

And for the finishing touch on your fall decor, don’t forget a pot or two of our beautiful fall mums. We’re confident you’ll find everything you need to welcome this fall season with open arms.
Fall is finally upon us! For some, that means bring on the pumpkin spice lattes and cardigans. For others, it means a slow, sad goodbye to the last rays of summer. Whatever camp you’re in, we hope you can enjoy–or at least be consoled by–the advent of comfort food season. Yes, that’s right! With the gradual decline in temperature from now through February comes the joys of filling our bellies with a warm bowl of hearty chili, your mom’s famous chicken pot pie, or a roast you’ve been crock-potting all day. But wait! Fresh fruits and veggies are still popping up out of the not-yet-frozen soil and falling off still-green trees! And with that, we have the best of both worlds. We would argue it’s fall’s favorite fruit: the apple.
And if you, like us, are a fan of the apple…well you’ve come to the right place. Both figuratively and literally. If you’re in Washington (as we suspect you are), you’re in the top apple-producing state in America. I don’t know if you know this, but we’re kind of a big deal. In fact, 58% of America’s apples are grown right here in your own backyard. You read it right. That’s more than half. With all these apples growing great in your own state, there’s no reason to ever eat an apple from elsewhere. Lucky for you, Tacoma Boys and H&L Produce have the skinny on all the best locally grown apples and a few suggestions on how to have them.
First, let’s talk types. If you hear “Granny Smith”, “Jazz”, and “Lady Alice” and assume we’re talking about your neighbor’s Tuesday morning bridge club, you’re not alone. But alas, they’re actually the names of a few of the 7,500 varieties of apple in the world. It’s a lot of information to sift through. So here’s a quick guide to some of the varieties you’ll see on our shelves.
Our Favorite Fruit in Many Forms
Honeycrisp
You’ll know it’s a Honeycrisp as soon as you bite into it. Crisp and juicy, we love Honeycrisp for its distinctly sweet-but-not-too-sweet flavor. Perfect to eat all by itself or chopped up on a salad. Swing by Tacoma Boys or H&L Produce this week and get a great deal on a 20lb bag! With an apple so versatile, you’ll be glad you did!
Gravenstein
Graventstein is one of the oldest varieties of apples. It harkens from Europe, although the specifics are unclear. This variety is known for its exquisite flavor. It’s one of our favorite fruit because it makes great applesauce and desserts. Gravenstein is considered a high quality apple variety and has been celebrated in festivals and fairs all its own.
Fuji
These hail originally from Japan (named after Mt. Fuji). Their fantastic crisp and sweet flavor have made them a favorite go-to snack for years. You’ll recognize them by their mostly red coloring with just a touch of yellow and/or green.
Golden Delicious
This mild little cutie is a delightful yellow-to-green color with freckles for good measure. Just a little bit sweet and not too tart, it’s easy on the taste buds and doesn’t like to make waves. Great for snacking! Or mix them with apples that have a little more tartness and bake into a pie.
A Few Ways to “Fall” in Love with Apples
Apple Walnut Salad
Start with a spring mix, preferably one with spinach and arugula. Then, add cranberries, walnuts, and chopped apples (honeycrisp is a great choice for this salad). Finally, toss in the dressing of your choice. We recommend Brianna’s Homestyle Blush Wine Vinaigrette from our dressing aisle. Serve as a side salad with pork chops, or add chopped chicken to it to make an entree salad!
Ooey Gooey Caramel Apples
Is it really fall if you don’t sink your teeth and get them stuck in the stickiest, messiest treat around? You may think of it as “hard to eat,” but we think of it as a rite of passage. This recipe from Just a Taste calls for Granny Smith apples and strikes the right balance of easy and fun. Swing by our candy aisle for topping ideas (Hint: Seattle Chocolate’s “Mexican Hot Chocolate” bar, chopped into tiny pieces so it sticks). Go ahead, take a bite out of fall.
Classic Apple Pie
Are you so excited to spend hours peeling, coring, and chopping apples? More power to you! But for the rest of us who love America’s favorite dessert but aren’t down for the prep time, Tacoma Boys and H&L Produce has just the thing. Swing by our freezer aisle, and pick up a bag of frozen Granny Smith Apples from Remington Farms. Grown right here in Washington and frozen at peak ripeness, these delicious apples are already skinless, seedless, cut and waiting to be thrown in a pie. Nobody will guess you didn’t do it yourself and we won’t tell! Try this recipe from Taste of Home and wow your friends and family with your domestic prowess.
One Tree Cinnamon Caramel Hard Cider
Ok, so it’s a bit of a jaunt from the produce aisle. But One Tree cidery uses Washington apples to produce a cider that’s absolutely perfect for fall. Seriously, it’s like apple pie in a bottle. Looking for more fall flavors? While you’re perusing our cider aisle, check out Whitewood’s “Gravenstein” Cider and 2 Towns Ciderhouse’s “Easy Squeezy.”

3 Tips to Happy Houseplants
1. DO NOT OVERWATER.
I know what you’re thinking. “I thought plants LOVE water.” They do. But enough is enough, and too much is way too much when it comes to succulents. This tip is first because many a succulent has died at the hands of a water-happy gardener.
The trick is to forget about them for looooong stretches of time, past the point when all your other plants would have shrivelled up and died. Then guilt water it like crazy. Really soak it. Then forget about it again. Seriously though, infrequency is key, but so is the deep soak. It gives them all the water they need, but a chance to dry out in between. This is especially important in Washington winters. If it takes a week for your towel to dry out, how do you think your plant feels? Wet. That’s how it feels. Give it a break.
2. Succulents, like sinuses, need drainage.
Repeat this tip like the life-giving mantra it is. It goes hand in hand with the overwatering tip. They’re both weapons to fight your sweet little succulent’s greatest enemy: soggy roots. And before you get overwhelmed by fancy gardening terms like “drainage,” calm down. It just means make sure your pot has holes in the bottom. All that water from the occasional guilt downpour has to have somewhere to go. How would you like to sit in a soggy mud bath for a week or more? Your plant doesn’t like it either. When it comes to extra water in your pot, take Elsa’s advice and “Let it go.” Hairy the houseplant will thank you.
3. May the sun shine upon the face of your saucy succulent.
Succulents would love to be outside in Arizona more than they want to be in your house. Once you swallow that tough pill, your life and the life of your new little friend will be easier. Honor its roots (see what we did there?) by giving it a room with a view of the sunny outside life it longs for. Or at least a spot by a window. Preferably, a window that gets a lot of sun. If you’re in the Northern Hemisphere, that means a southern-facing window. Still struggling? Go inside. Face the sunset. Is there a window to your left? That’s a great home for Hairy!
Now that you’ve read our tips and are thus an expert succulent grower, you’re ready to pick out your new friend. Succulents grow in a wide variety, and we have plenty to offer at Tacoma Boys and H&L Produce. We try our best to set you up for success, so the following are our sauciest succulents, guaranteed to thrive in the PNW. Ok, no guarantees, but we’ve done our best to overcome your black thumb, and that’s all we can really do. Without further ado…
Tacoma Boys’ Lineup of Saucy Succulents
Hens & Chicks (Sempervivum tectorium)
Ok, even the name is cute! Hens and Chicks are clumping rosettes that stay green all year long. They flower a lovely purple in the summer, and their babies are easily transplantable (hence the clever nickname).
Rattail Crassula
So the name’s not so cute, but the plant more than makes up for it. It’s known for the multitude of tiny little leaves that flock its stems in an arrangement that creates a square shape. Some people call it “Princess Pines,” and we’re here for it. This little guy is an “invasive species,” but we like to think of it as ambitious!
Stonecrop (Sedum “Coppertone”)
Called “Stonecrop,” because the only thing easier to care for are stones (who says gardeners don’t have a sense of humor?). This is the plant for you! These plants (along with many succulents) literally get their start just by lying on top of soil. That’s it. You can do this! Bonus: They sprout a cute little white flower in midsummer.
Panda Plant (Kalanchoe)
Yep, you heard right. It’s called a Panda Plant, and it’s adorable. Soft, fuzzy and spotted, it’s basically a pet you don’t have to feed. But speaking of feeding pets…don’t feed Panda Plant to your pet, as it’s toxic to them. But if you’re a cat free home looking for a fur baby to call your own, Panda Plant is the succulent for you!
