Meal prepping is a great way to save time during busy workdays and get a head start on healthy eating. By planning a bit ahead of time and even cooking ahead of time, you can enjoy healthy, satisfying meals without the exhausting effort each and every night. Because of meal prepping, you can simplify your cooking and eating habits and spend less time cooking and cleaning up every night. Plus this helps with saving money by avoiding eating out.
What is Meal Prepping?
Meal prepping simply means to plan, prepare, and sometimes cook what you’re going to eat ahead of time. This can be a week ahead of time or even the night before. Although it’s considered a trendy idea, it’s quite a basic process that people have been doing for decades and centuries. There are many different ways you can meal prep – some more simple than others!
Purchasing prepared foods to eat later for low effort meals
A popular favorite is Rill Foods’ prepared soup mixes like Tacoma Tortilla, Columbia River Corn Chowder, or Miners Minestrone. These products are already set to go with pre-measured ingredients and instructions.
Preparing an entire week’s worth of meals for quick and easy dinners
Simply cook and prepare your meals on a Sunday and store in tupperware! This allows you to reheat accordingly during the week, saving you time and cleanup. Make sure to label the tupperware with the date it was made and enjoy the meal before it goes bad. Check out this guide for a reference on how to safely store and reheat “leftovers” by the USDA.
Many people who practice meal prepping choose to do most of the planning, grocery shopping, and prepping or cooking on the weekends so they have a week’s worth of food ready to go when they’re busy on workdays. At Tacoma Boys, a wide selection of kitchen staples and speciality foods will keep you stocked with whatever you need every day of the week.
How to Meal Prep
Learn how to meal prep with a few simple steps.
You’ll need basic healthy ingredients like fruits, vegetables, seasonings, proteins, and whole grains to get started
Once you’re home with your ingredients, get to prepping!
Pre cut your vegetables and store them in an airtight container, mix seasonings, and trim and marinade meat, until you’re ready to use it all
Optional:
Prepare the entire meal and cook all of the meal’s components. Protein, fruit, vegetables, and whole grains like Ancient Harvest Quinoa or a starch like Baby Red and Gold Potatoes, can all be cooked at once. Just store it in a tupperware and reheat it when you’re ready for a satisfying meal.
Variety is Key
Some people learn how to meal prep by cooking a large batch of something that is good for multiple meals (like a big pot of hearty soup) and dividing that into several containers. This leaves you with several servings ready to go for meals throughout the week. But if you’re one to get tired of the same old thing every day, mix it up a bit. Try preparing two or three meals and alternating throughout the week. To get you started, try one of Tacoma Boys’ various organic dried pastas like Scialateilli’s Gentile or Montebello’s Farfalle paired simply with jarred tomato sauce and fresh Portobello, Crimini, or Shitake Mushrooms. Then, consider something with different flavors like this simple Vegetable Stir Fry recipe by Once Upon a Chef.
Meal Prep Ideas
Breakfast
Overnight oats in a jar, breakfast burritos, breakfast sandwiches, scrambles
Lunch
Salad in a jar, classic protein & veggies, sandwiches, turkey roll ups, stir fry
Dinner
Marinated protein, burrito bowls, meatballs, enchiladas, pasta sauces
Snacks
Protein or bliss balls, pre-cut veggies and hummus, pre-cut fruit, chia seed pudding

Appetizer
Creamy and rich, classic cheese fondue is one of the most popular Valentine’s Day appetizers- and for good reason. It’s fun to eat and simple to prepare with speciality cheeses, like Emmi Le Gruyére, plus fresh Fuji Apples and crusty sourdough bread for dipping.
Salad
Choose your favorite tasty dressing from Tacoma Boys’ large wall of salad dressings for the ultimate flavor boost. Start with Mixed Greens, Yellow Cherry Tomatoes, Fresh Basil, Bel Gioioso Shaved Parmesan, and Fresh Gourmet Organic Seasoned Croutons. Finish with a drizzle of your go-to Tacoma Boys dressing and you’re set!
Dinner
Tacoma Boys makes it easy to enjoy a gourmet meal with less prep time thanks to stuffed chicken breasts! These pre-made stuffed chicken breasts come in many variations with different ingredients. Is it time for the 2021 Super Bowl already?! The day is coming up quick which means it’s time to come up with your Super Bowl appetizers menu. Nothing screams “Super Bowl” more than a table full of classic Super Bowl appetizers that keep everyone coming back for more. Although there may be no large gatherings this year, hosting for your household can still be a fun time. There’s no better way to get geared up for the big game than to plan out this year’s menu.
Super Bowl Appetizers
What is it about appetizers that make them a great fit for football games? Whether it’s the variety or convenience of small bites, our favorite Super Bowl appetizers are lined up and ready to share! Whip up your favorite Super Bowl appetizers with fresh, specialty ingredients found at your local Tacoma Boys.

Jalapeño Poppers
Jalapeño poppers may be one of the most popular game day appetizers out there, and it’s easy to understand why! If you’re a fan of spicy and savory small bites, jalapeño poppers are the perfect choice for you. Select a large handful of fresh jalapeños from the produce section followed by your go-to cream cheese and shredded cheddar. Simply mix the cream cheese and cheddar, then stuff the halved jalapeño peppers and bake. If you want to take your jalapeño popper game up a notch, wrap them in Tacoma Boys’ applewood smoked thick-cut bacon – you won’t regret it. Savory Tooth has a great recipe for bacon wrapped jalapeño poppers here.
Potato Skins
What is it about potato skins that make them so addicting?! Potatoes are great all around, but potato skins are next-level. Plus they’re incredibly easy to make which is an added bonus. Instead of whipping up traditional loaded potato skins, try making Real House Mom’s bbq chicken potato skins for this year’s game. We recommend grabbing a few of Tacoma Boys’ baker potatoes to ensure the crispiest skin for the best crunch!
Pigs in a Blanket
Okay, there is no denying that pigs in a blanket are a game day must. They’re a hit with both adults and kids and are the perfect bite. If you’re looking to make your pigs in a blanket a bit fancier this year, substitute classic hot dogs for a pack of Snake River Farms American Wagyu Beef Gourmet Frankfurters. Slice those up and roll them in French Butter Puff Pastry found in the freezer section at your local Tacoma Boys.

“Hygge” is not a new concept to appear in 2021. In fact, the word “hygge” has been used so frequently in recent years that it made it onto the Oxford Dictionaries’ “word of the year” list four years ago. Generally, hygge means an intentional effort at comfort and coziness that leads to well-being and contentment. After a year like 2020, I think we can all agree that it’s time to revive hygge in 2021 for your well-being. Tacoma Boys is here to help you.
Hygge (pronounced “hoo-guh”) is a Danish concept that is fairly tricky to define. In fact, I think those of us who are outside Danish culture might never fully grasp it’s meaning. If you want to do a deep dive into this idea, check out this informative article in the New Yorker. Most of us don’t need persuading that an atmosphere of comfort and health is something we long for, especially as we reset at the beginning of a new year. The good news is that it doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg to achieve a sense of this well-being that the Danes call hygge.
Creating a Cozy Atmosphere
A good question to ask yourself as you work towards creating a space that is a comfort to you is: What causes me to take a deep breath and slow down? Again, this isn’t about getting an expensive sofa or a new area rug. Picking up fresh herbs and making your favorite soup is “hygge.” Pouring a cup of tea with an aroma that makes you savor each sip is also hygge. Inviting a close friend to share life stories with you over a glass of wine and a simple spread of fresh fruit and cheese can also be hygge. To make things simple for you, we’ve come up with three simple ways to hygge-intentional.
3 Simple Ways to Be Intentional
1. Add a Houseplant (or several)
Caring for a live plant can be an enjoyable endeavor or a stressful one, but you won’t know which it is for you unless you give it a shot. For many, the weekly rhythm of watering a plant and checking on it’s growth is a grounding experience. Not only that, indoor plants are natural air purifiers. NASA studies show that houseplants can remove up to 87% or toxins in the air within a 24hr period. Clean air sounds good to us!
Succulents
Succulents require very little maintenance, which makes them one of the easiest plants to add to your home. The main concern a succulent has is getting ample light. They grow best placed in South-facing windows. If you’re not lucky enough to have a South-facing window, try a succulent with more flexible light needs like an aloe vera. We have a large variety of succulents here at Tacoma Boys, perhaps you’ll find a variety that speaks to you.
Potted Herbs
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme… or lemon balm, mint, oregano, tarragon, lavender. Why stick with the mainstream varieties? Potted herbs are a great addition to your space. Their aroma can be uplifting, energizing, relaxing, and even inspiring. Herbs are the type of houseplants that beg for you to touch and interact with them, because they engage multiple senses at once. Keep them as permanent residents in your home or just as semi-temporary additions that inspire you to take the time to cook something from scratch. Tacoma Boys can get you set up with soil, plants, pots, and growing advice.
Fresh Cut Flowers
Granted, these aren’t going to purify the air like a potted plant would, but cut flowers can do plenty for lifting your mood. Add a bouquet to your dining table, or get a single bouquet to divide into mini bouquets for multiple areas in your house. Tacoma Boys Markets have beautiful cut flower bouquets at the ready and we won’t be insulted if their beauty inspires you to divide them into mini bouquets. We also have colorful hanging baskets and pouches grown by our dedicated, local partners like the DeGoede Brothers in Sumner, Washington.
2. Add Light & Aroma
Light a Candle
Though winter solstice is behind us and we are gaining a few minutes of light every day, the sun is still setting before 5pm. That means that it’s prime candle lighting season. Beyond adding a feeling of warmth, scented candles can have the same effect as potted herbs in your home: uplifting, energizing, relaxing, and even inspiring.
Stovetop Potpourri
Don’t toss those orange peels after you’ve devoured the oranges, add them to a stovetop potpourri. Filling your house with aroma can be as simple as adding a few fresh herbs and spices to a pot of water on your stovetop. Want the cozy reminder of Christmastime, add cinnamon sticks, orange peels, and cranberries to the pot. Believe it or not, scent can encourage our well-being. Enjoy blending spices to create your own aromas or check out this blog post to discover some great combinations, then stop by the Tacoma Boys spice section for more inspiration.
3. Warm up from the inside out
As it turns out, the scientific research behind drinking warm beverages doesn’t actually confirm that drinking hot coffee will raise your body temperature, but it does show that it affects our emotions. Unless you’re stuck in the cold and in danger of hypothermia, the main reason you crave a warm beverage is for the warming feeling that it creates. Brewing yourself a cup of hot tea, with the intention of sipping it slowly falls clearly in the category of hygge activities. Take some time to hold a mug full of aromatic tea or coffee and we’re sure you won’t be sorry.
Tea
Not all tea drinkers are identical. Some fall firmly into the green tea camp, while others stand by herbal tea. That’s why we have a huge and varied selection of signature tea blends that you won’t find anywhere else. Northwest Rose Garden, Chocolate Macaroon, and Shiro Plum Black, are just a few of the unique teas in our selection. A warm mug of tea is good for your well-being and may be just the thing you need to help you slow down. Enjoy a cup fireside with a good book.
There is no magic formula for creating hygge. The thread that connects all of these “hygge-esque” activities, is the act of slowing down and being deliberate. We can’t think of a better activity for this than making a meal with fresh ingredients and sitting down to share it with someone you love. At the heart of what we do here at Tacoma Boys, is the joy of providing the quality ingredients to allow you to do this. Whether you light a candle, make a meal, or cradle a warm cup of tea in your hands, know that it is our pleasure to serve you as you take steps toward your well-being in 2021.
As we reach the peak of sick season, it’s important to be fueling your body with immune boosting foods – especially this year! Consuming a well-rounded diet consisting of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other immune boosting foods is a great way to help your body fight off the flu or any other infections. The Tacoma Boys list of favorite immune boosting foods is the perfect place to start when incorporating more of these foods into your daily diet.
Immune Boosting Foods & Why They’re Important
Before we tap into immune boosting foods, let’s cover our immune system, what it is, and how it works for us. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, our immune system is “a network of intricate stages and pathways in the body, that protects us against these harmful microbes as well as certain diseases. It recognizes foreign invaders like bacteria, viruses, and parasites and takes immediate action.”
There are many different factors that play a role in a healthy immune system; sleep, stress, age, chronic illness, diet, and more. Although diet is only one component of a healthy immune system, it is an important one. A diet lacking certain micronutrients, vitamins, and minerals can lead to chronic inflammation and a weak immune system. This is why immune boosting foods are important – they have naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that help prepare your body to fight off any free radicals or unforeseen illness such as a common cold.
Fresh Local Produce
It should be no surprise that fresh local produce is on the list of immune boosting foods. All fresh and local produce have a wide variety of health benefits, and you can find a large selection of produce at your local Tacoma Boys.
Fruits
Citrus
Citrus is a common go-to food when people get sick due to its high Vitamin C content. According to Healthline, Vitamin C is known to increase white blood cells which are crucial for fighting infections. Some of the most common citrus fruits are:
Oranges
Grapefruit
Lemon
Lime
Berries
Berries are among some of the highest antioxidant-rich foods. From blueberries to strawberries, raspberries, and even blackberries, incorporating these into your diet is a great way to give your immune system a boost.
Vegetables
There’s no denying that a diet rich in vegetables is beneficial all-around. Adding an abundance of various greens and other vegetables will aid in your vitamin and mineral intake. Try adding spinach to soup, spaghetti sauce, or a huge handful of mixed greens to a smoothie. There are many ways to incorporate these phytonutrient rich vegetables into your daily lifestyle.
Kale – high in fiber and a great source of Vitamin C, A, K, B6, and more
Spinach – great source of iron, Vitamin C, K, A, magnesium, and more
Mixed Greens – high in Vitamin A, C, beta-carotene, fiber, and more
Red Bell Peppers – source of Vitamin C, A, and beta-carotene – according to Healthline, red bell peppers contain 3x more Vitamin C than a Florida Orange
Broccoli – another high source of Vitamin C, fiber, and various vitamins and minerals
Aromatics
Aromatics are vegetables that add a depth of flavor to any dish. This can be spices, onions, garlic, and more. A lot of aromatics are packed full of nutrients which is why adding them to dishes is a great way to boost your food with additional vitamins and minerals.
Garlic
Garlic is one of the most commonly used aromatics in the kitchen. But did you know that it packs a punch when it comes to nutrients? Garlic contains trace amounts of various vitamins and minerals and is loaded with Vitamin C, B6, manganese, fiber, and selenium. Adding extra garlic to soups when feeling unwell may have the ability to help your body heal faster.
Onions
Similar to garlic, onions are found in many dishes and recipes. Onions are high in Vitamin C and flavonoids which are known to be similar to antioxidants. These help your body naturally fight off any unwanted sickness.
Ginger & Turmeric
Ginger and turmeric are both aromatics that have been used in alternative medicine healing for years. Both are known to help decrease inflammation and aid in immune health. Ginger and turmeric can be found in its whole root form, or you can buy it dried and ground in the spice section. Pair these aromatics with tea, smoothies, soups, and more.
Fermented Foods
Fermented foods such as yogurt, sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, and more have been shown to aid in a healthy immune system. When foods are fermented they gain a load of healthy bacteria commonly known and probiotics. Fermented foods are great for gut health, and a healthy gut positively affects your immune system by boosting the ability to fight off infections and viruses.
Be Kind to Your Immune System
As we are in unprecedented times, it’s even more important to be kind to our immune systems and give them a little extra boost! When you pop into your local Tacoma Boys, take a look around at the fresh fruits, vegetables, fermented foods, aromatics, local honey, bone broth, and more. How to Cook Seafood
If you’re looking for advice on how to cook seafood, look no further! After selecting your seafood of choice at Tacoma Boys, you’ll need something to season it with. Get creative with your own blend or rub, choosing spices and tastes to preference, or skip the prep and grab a bottle of Garlic Gourmay to use when you cook seafood. Several different flavors will elevate fresh seafood, from garlic mesquite or garlic jalapeño, to Jamaican jerk, honey lime, and more.
Grill
Grilled seafood is popular for its resulting flavor and tender texture. It takes a couple simple steps to prepare your ingredients, preheat your grill, and cook seafood quickly. Grill seasoned filets of salmon or several shrimp hot and fast to cook fully and lock in flavor. If you don’t see those nice grill marks, don’t worry and don’t wait: It may very well be fully cooked without the perfect marks, and hot grills can burn food fast!
Fry
Pan-frying is a straight-forward and common method to cook seafood. It should yield crisp, succulent bites of fish with or without the skin. Using a batter, flour, or breadcrumbs will add a bit of a crust, but isn’t necessary. To cook fish filets in a pan, place the battered or seasoned fish in a hot, well-oiled pan. When it’s crisped and cooked to your liking on one side, flip the fish and cook the other side. If the filet is thick and fatty, it may need to be baked in the oven to finish cooking to temperature.
Oven
Baking fish in the oven is easy and efficient because you can leave a well-seasoned piece of fish in the oven for a few minutes while you prepare your sides. At the right oven temperature, seafood will cook to temperature throughout without overcooking on the outside. Just be sure to keep an eye on the clock!
Seafood Recipes
Seafood recipes are plentiful as they generally require basic ingredients and kitchen staples to round out a satisfying meal. If you’re not ready to create your own seafood recipe, there are several tried and true recipes you can try:
Grab a couple of Tacoma Boys’ sweet and juicy heirloom oranges and a lemon for a balanced finish to this Easy Honey Citrus Sheet Pan Salmon seafood recipe by Killing Thyme.
Scallops are commonly seared to create a crispy crust. Scallop Fra Diavolo by Champagne Tastes is one way to go when a big bowl of pasta sounds just right.
Simple Baked Halibut Over Seasoned Wild Rice
This baked halibut seafood recipe uses Tacoma Boys’ Wild Alaskan Halibut and one of our favorite rubs with local ties: Tom Douglas’ Seafood Rub boosts the flavor of any type of fresh seafood with a flavorful blend of spices. On a bed of Lundberg Whole Grain Rice & Wild Rice, this basic seafood recipe is as tasty as it is quick to whip up.
Ingredients
Two 5-ounce boneless halibut filets (skin on)
1 teaspoon cooking oil of choice (such as avocado oil)
Follow package directions to cook Lundberg Organic Whole Grain Rice & Wild Rice: Combine rice, water, and seasonings in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer for about 30 minutes.
While the rice is cooking, preheat the oven to 400° F. Set filets in a medium baking dish and sprinkle rub evenly on filets. Rub gently over all sides of the filets.
In a large nonstick or greased baking dish, set halibut skin-side down and drizzle with oil. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until the halibut is flaky.
When 30 minutes is up, remove rice from heat. Let stand covered for 5 minutes before fluffing with a fork. Serve halibut over rice hot.

Pairing Pizza and Beer
Pizza and beer are a tried and true pair of pals. The combination has long been popular as a hearty, widely enjoyed, and easy-to-prepare meal for groups. There’s just something about a refreshing swig of a cold brew after the contrasting crunch of a hot pizza crust! Pizza and beer bring out similar flavors in each other, playing off sturdy notes of savory yeast and rich malt. It doesn’t take much to bake a pizza and put out a few six packs for an afternoon at home, making the pair ideal for hosting.
Types of Beer
Though any pizza is bound to play nicely with any beer, certain kinds of pizza and beer go together exceptionally well. Think light brews with light-colored ingredients, and dark brews with richer ingredients and toppings.
Wine pairings aren’t the first thing many people think of when it’s time to chow down on a pizza pie. However, a full-bodied glass of red or a cool glass of white wine go great with acidic sauces and flavorful toppings. For example, red wines play well with rich tomato sauce and toppings like pepperoni and peppers. On the other hand, consider a white wine pairing with light flavors like pesto and white sauce pizzas with subtle toppings like chicken and spinach. If you’re feeling indecisive, go for one of Tacoma Boys’ preferred wines to pair with our handmade pizza or download the wine wisdom guide by submitting your email address here.
White Wine
White wine pairs best with light, simple pizzas like pesto chicken, Hawaiian, or regular cheese pizza. The sweeter the wine, the simpler the ingredients.
Roscato Bianco Dolce is a sweet white wine from Italy with a small amount of carbonation and a low alcohol content.
Scarpetta 2017 Frico Bianco is a crisp, light cuvée made from multiple varieties of grapes.
Red Wine
Red wine pairings fit best with rich, robust flavors like combination/supreme and pepperoni pizza. Highly acidic reds like pinot noir pair well with traditional tomato sauce.
Fontalpino 2015 Carpineta Fontalpino Chianti Classico is a Sangiovese with strong tannins and acidity and notes of juicy berries.
Passion Vineyards 2006 Syrah is a traditional, deep Syrah from Washington state.
Other Wines
Sparkling or rose wine pairs well with just about anything. A plain palette makes it easy to wash down extra cheesy pizza with a glass of bubbly.
Portlandia 2019 Oregon Rose is a rose of pinot gris and noir with fresh hints of citrus.
Adult•ing Sparkling White Wine is a fun, base white wine with bubbles to boot.

It can be a common misconception that dairy products are bad for you – but when it comes to fresh and local dairy, these products pack a punch when we’re talking about nutrients. From bone health to immune health, fresh and local dairy contains various vitamins and minerals that aid in overall good health. There are countless ways to incorporate some of Tacoma Boys’ favorite fresh and local dairy products into yours and your family’s lifestyle.
The Benefits of Fresh and Local Dairy
Including fresh and local dairy products on your shopping list is a great way to add a good source of calcium and protein to daily meals. Local and organic dairy has proven to be more nutritious than traditional dairy products sold on the market. Choosing to buy local and organic dairy is a healthier option so you’re able to avoid any unwanted chemicals, added hormones, or unnecessary pesticides.
It’s important to note that dairy may not be for everyone. If you or someone you know has an allergy or an intolerance to dairy, Tacoma Boys carries a great selection of non-dairy milks and creamers that are bound to give you the same satisfaction! This is a great alternative for dairy-lovers who are unable to consume dairy because they are unable to digest the lactose found in dairy products. These non-dairy products also work great for those who choose not to include dairy in their diets due to other external factors.
